How to Build an Ecommerce Website

Ecommerce has grown by leaps and bounds. And if you are thinking of opening an online the business, the time is certainly now! You probably have qualms to start an ecommerce site more so if you have very limited computer knowledge. However, this should not deter you from taking a slice of the online profits pie.

Due to the wide popularity of ecommerce many web design options have mushroomed. You can take your pick but bear in mind that an ecommerce website is different from any other informal website. In an ecommerce site you have to give prime consideration to the conversion rate. Browsers will be turned into paying customers if they get attracted to the website and if they feel secure enough to part with their credit card numbers. Qualified traffic is the bloodline of an ecommerce website…the basic factor for the existence and success of an online business.

If you are a newbie in online business, the first thing you need to do is decide on how to build your ecommerce website. You have three options to choose from. There large hosting companies that offer all in one hosting packages. Hosting companies like Yahoo, Homestead and GoDaddy will provide you with site builder plans. This is the most feasible option for a beginner as instead of paying a big amount for the website you only have to pay a monthly fee to cover the hosting.

The second option is to use an ecommerce system. Buy an existing ecommerce system that will help you set up your website with their store templates. With a ready to use shopping cart software, your customers will be provided with ease in selecting the products, totals the purchases and submits the credit card information for the payment of the purchases.

The last option is to hire a web development company if you want a really unique site or you have a specific ecommerce system in mind. This would cost you more but it will be well worth it as aside from benefiting from a well designed and customized ecommerce website, the right company will provide the website with search engine optimization techniques. This would pave the way for the success of your online venture. Ranking high on the SERPs would mean a steady flow of qualified traffic.

An online entrepreneur would be wise to invest in a good website design as this is one factor that will make visitors stay and purchase the products being offered. Equally important to keep visitors coming back is the ecommerce system of the website.

  1. For my site, I had a web designer build a basic site (no ecommerce) then recently had it built into Joomla! 1.5 so that I can have a CMS and be able do most of my own updates. It’s a little more work (especially learning Joomla!) but its worth it in the end.
